É sempre muito bom estar no Brasil.  Adoro ver família e amigos, adoro as comidas, o clima, a música, a praia…
Putz!  Aquilo pesa, viu!

It’s always great to go to Brazil.  I love to see my family and friends, and adore the food, the weather, the music, the beach… It’s awesome to see my kids kissed by the Brazilian sun!!!  This time was no different.  If anything, it was better because we went during Carnival and paraded in Mocidade, a school of samba.
I must confess that many things have changed and my advanced age is showing.  We went to the Spucaí (the name of the avenue where we parade) with our good friends Monica and Leslie.  Back when I lived in Rio there was a gate about 100 meters before the school turned into the avenue.  Now there is another gate at the very beginning of the waiting/meeting area.  Because of this we had to spit from our friends way earlier than expected in order to go through the gate and find our places.  In addition to that, once on the other side of those gates we couldn’t buy beer.  The parade was fun, for me at least, it’s alway emotional, but we didn’t manage to walk right in front of the percussion as I intended.  Actually, the percussion hadn’t even left it’s starting place (on the other side of where we enter the avenue.
When I said that my age is showing is because, for the first time, I got tired of carrying the costume.  Chris and I were carrying a huge bag with a costume each. Wow!  That was heavy!  To make matters worse, at the end of the parade it started to rain. When we finally got back to Monica and Leslie to have that beer, the sky opened and it started pouring. Needless to say, we left.  As we couldn’t carry the costumes any longer, we kind of “forgot” them right there at the kiosk.
A big issue for us this time around was how expensive Brazil was.  From the rentals to food, clothes and babysitters, everything was expensive.  We spent a lot more than we wanted because once we are there we want the Brazilian barbecue, feijoada, and so forth.  If that wasn’t enough, my mom didn’t like our (very afordable) nanny so our cost went skyhigh.  I guess that next time we go to Brazil we will be on a budget so we don’t pay for it for a whole year.

Minha filhinha fez 5 anos!! As meninas adoraram. Sel, Pa, Cris e Erika — Valeu!

My little girl turned 5!! Time sure flies.  During Christmas and New Years with Tucker and Piper here, we were very busy.  Thus, I decided to have Natalie’s birthday party in January.  We had 10 little princesses here doing all sorts of activities, amongst them coloring a princess pillowcase, put the star on the top of the wand with their eyes covered and decorate a tiara.  During the party we had two special princesses arrive, Cinderella and Belle!! The girls loved it.  The princesses helped decorate the tiaras, read two stories to the girls, sang happy birthday and took pictures.  Here is a special thank you to my good friends who were here and helped serve food, decorate the cake and clean up afterwards.  Sel, Pa, Cris e Erika — You’re awesome!

It’s been a while that Chris and I have wanted a professional picture of all the kids.  Of course it had to be Pea Pod.  In September, at the end of summer right before Tucker and Piper had to go back to Michigan, we did this photo shoot.  The result is a photo that we can’t get enough of.  We absolutely love it!!  I liked it so much that as soon as I got my hands on the photo I started working on the Christmas card.  I just felt like sharing this picture with everyone.
Here is the card.  Clean, with the focus on the photo itself.  This year, our Christmas card got so many complements that I was surprised.  I want to leave it registered here, as it’s hard to believe that we’ll ever have a holiday card that will surpass this one.

Adivinha o quanto eu te amo / Guess How Much I Love You novembro 26, 2010

Chris: Nati, voce me ama daqui ate a lua? (referencia ao livro “Guess How Much I Love You”, Adivinha O Quanto Eu Te Amo, de Sam McBratney)

I have a new one from Natalie to tell.  She is at this extremely lovable phase, giving us lots of hugs and saying how much she loves us.  Last week we saw the moon from wherever we were; in the car, at the store, at home. One evening at dinner time Natalie was going on about how much she loved us when I showed her the moon and the following dialog took place:

Natalie: Papai (daddy), I love you the size of this house and all around our street.

Me: Nati, look how beautiful the full moon looks tonight!

Chris: Nati, do you love me all the way to the moon? (Reference to Guess How much I Love You, by Sam McBratney)

Natalie: No.  I love you all the way to the airport!

Chris and I exchanged looks but we understood her.  For Natalie, who will turn 5 in a month, the moon is right there on the sky, we can see it from our kitchen table. The airport, on the other hand, is very far away and we need to get in the car and drive for 1 hour and a half.  The airport is, without a doubt, much farther than the moon!

Life is getting a little easier and I’m able to enjoy my little ones more.  I tell people that now-a-days Nicholas’s food is going into his mouth instead of his clothes, the chair  the floor and the walls. This means that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  I have less things to clean and more time to play.  Also, Nicholas is obeying more and Natalie is able to do several things by herself.

Ah, my husband.  He is my number 1 fan.  After three years without a vacation without the kids, we went for a long weekend trip just the two of us.  It was also work for Chris, but still, it was excellent.  I believe every couple should take time for themselves without kids.  They should relax a little and let the person who has been suffocated under house work, kids, work, family, come out again.  Here are some pictures from the trip to Phoenix to enjoy.

Homens / Men novembro 7, 2010

I’m still getting used to living with a man.  Seriously, I didn’t know how incapable and unconscius men are until about a year ago.  If Natalie growns up to be a lesbian, it’ll be partially my fault for all the complaining about men in 2010.  At first I thought Chris was kidding, he is actually pretty smart.  Then I started believing he was doing — or not doing — things on purpose, just to upset me.   Once I started talking about these things with my friends to vent out or to see if I’m going crazy and overeacting for no real reason, I learned that all men do the same things.  As my friend Patti says, they are all the same, just faces and addresses change.
It’s amazing how the “do the dishes” part to a man goes as far as putting plates, silverwear and glasses in the dishwasher.  For a woman, the serving spoons and dishes as well as pots and pans are included.  For a man, to “clean the table” is to take those dishes to the sink. The same thing, for a woman means not only taking the dirty dishes to the sink, but also putting away left over food, salad dressing, cleaning place mats and putting them away and cleaning the table — plus chairs and floor if you have young kids. For a woman, bathing the kids includes putting dirty laundry in the hamper, closing shampoo and soap bottles, returning the towels to the towel rack, drying the floor and turning off the lights, not to mention drying kids’ body and hair, dress them and brush their hair. For a man, it means to give the kids a bath and period. Even when they are “helping” they manage to create more work for us. One night Chris helped with the dehumidifier.  The next morning the kids’ bathroom was all yet, it got the fabric hamper and the clothes inside all wet plus Natalie sliped and fell.

I think I didn’t notice certain things, or the lack thereof, before I had kids.  Even with just one it wasn’t that bad.  But when you have to multiply yourself to get things done and the husband does half of what should be done, doesn’t do it or does it wrong… it is horrible.  I also understand now why affairs exist.  Basically, the husband gets home, helps with the kids for a couple hours and goes watch TV or play video/computer games. The wife keeps going and doing little things until she colapses in bed, sometimes even later then the husband.  Sex? It’s the last thing on her mind.  Actually, there was a research that found out that close to 90% of mothers of more than one child prefer sleep to sex.  I hear ya, girlfriend!

Now that I got that out of my system, let me continue.  I’ve been talking about Chris but let me tell you, I’ve heard some wonderful stories from other women!! One of the husbands decided to do laundry and one piece of clothe had a dye that ran and the whole laundry had a pinkish hue at the end.  One took his child to school in different shoes, not socks but shoes!  Another one helps his wife with house chores, but instead of doing his part every week, he does it once a month.  Yet another, while the wife went to take care of family business he spent one long weekend at home with one request: to vacuum the house. When she got back only the living room was vacuumed and the hose was broken.  There is still the common ones such as forgetting things in the car, losing stuff under their own pile of papers, asking the wife where things are when they are right in front of them, calling wife to ask about where things are, and much more.  So, I believe we are a normal family! 🙂

This is one of those things I have to tell before I forget.  I wish I could tape it but what are the chances I’ll have the camera in my hands next time it happens?  Nicholas just turned 2 earlier this month and he is talking well for his age, although not everybody can understand him.  He has been learning to say please, sorry, thank you and you’re welcome.  At the same time, he is only 2 and his favorite word is NO.  Even when he wants to say yes, he starts with no and changes to yes in the middle of the word.
Our night routine is kind of like this: we all dine together, then the kids play while we sort through mailing or start cleaning the kitchen, then either Chris or I take the kids upstairs for their bath while the other finishes the kitchen, then together we prepare them for bed brushing teeth, reading books, tucking them in, kisses and good night.  Nicholas never wants to stop playing to go take a bath.  Now he not only complains saying “no” but he does it politely: “no, thank you.” It’s too funny!! I say “let’s go up to take a bath” and he replies in a crying voice, “no.  No, thank you!”  He must be thinking that if he is polite I might let him skip bath.

Someday, many years from now, we’ll look back on this crazy time in our life together and wonder how we did it all… and then, those ordinary, everyday moments that we often take for granted will shimmer like stars as we recount them… I’ll sit close beside you, you’ll take my hand in yours.  We’ll look at each other and say: “I’d do it all again… and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

There’s no one I’d rather go through life with than you.

Anniversary card, from me to Christopher.

Escola / School setembro 22, 2010

The other day I was at a friend’s house and we were talking about the kids going back to school. This friend was talking about the fact her daughter was starting high school and that every time she drove by the new school her eyes would fill up with tears. At the time everyone laughed, but later I was trying to imagine what she must have been going through. I will probably cry a river when Natalie goes to school. Let me tell you that Natalie moved to a more structured pre-school class. They sent home a bunch of papers explaining the changes, the things she will learn this year, the activities, schedule and the drop of nap (not that she was napping anymore, but still….). This was enough for me to feel that tug in my heart. Next year she will actually start kindergarten, and I don’t even want to think about it.

Entiada / Step daughter agosto 20, 2010

Now I want to talk about Piper, my step daughter who is turning 9 this year.  She is a beautiful person, although a child, with all her childish behavior and weird things.  I really enjoy her company. I like to talk to her and teach her new things. Unlike her brother, she listens and even asks questions.  She loves to organize things, enjoys helping in the kitchen and even knows how to do some house chores, such as fold laundry.  There is, of course, a negative side to her, where she is spoiled, envious and rude. Still, she enjoys when we are hanging out all together.  That might be one of the reasons why she plays so well with Natalie and Nicholas.

Natalie is her #1 fan!  It’s quite funny to see the little sister copying everything the big sister does. Also, Natalie makes drawings and cards for Piper.  When Chris goes visit the kids, he can’t forget to bring with him all the arts and crafts Natalie prepared for her. Obviously Piper enjoys the attention, especially because with Tucker nearby, the tendency is for him to be the focus of the room.  I believe she needs a little more attention.

One thing that has been testing our patience regarding Piper is her dress style. She is a little funky, a little hippie but with clothes that are old and have holes in them.  The girl has no pants, only leggings!  That’s not always appropriate.  Last year we gave her a pair of jeans (she looked really good in them, but still said she doesn’t like jeans) and another pretty grey pants (which we never she her in them).  Even so, every time she’s with us she has nothing else to wear.  I thought that maybe I was trying to force a certain style on her, which is not my intention!  I just want her to wear an outfit that suites the weather and location where we are.  So this year I’m doing it differently, I’m showing her other options, not necessarily jeans.  She also almost doesn’t have dressy clothes.  Once in while I’m trying to find something of mine that would fit her.  It’s crazy!
